Fixed-Point Logics on Planar Graphs
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the expressive power of inflationary fixed-point logic IFP and inflationary fixed-point logic with counting IFP+C on planar graphs. We prove the following results: (1) IFP captures polynomial time on 3-connected planar graphs, and IFP+C captures polynomial time on arbitrary planar graphs. (2) Planar graphs can be characterized up to isomorphism in a logic with finitely many variables and counting. This answers a question of Immerman [7]. (3) The class of planar graphs is definable in IFP. This answers a question of Dawar and Grädel [16].

Expressive power of monadic logics on words, trees, pictures, and graphs
We give a survey of the expressive power of various monadic logics on specific classes of finite labeled graphs, including words, trees, and pictures. Among the logics we consider, there are monadic secondorder logic and its existential fragment, the modal mu-calculus, and monadic least fixed-point logic. We focus on nesting-depth and quantifier alternation as a complexity measure of these logics.
متن کاملThe decidability of guarded fixed point logic
Guarded fixed point logics are obtained by adding least and greatest fixed points to the guarded fragments of first-order logic that were recently introduced by Andréka, van Benthem and Németi. Guarded fixed point logics can also be viewed as the natural common extensions of the modal μ-calculus and the guarded fragments. In a joint paper with Igor Walukiewicz, we proved recently that the satis...
متن کاملCapturing Logarithmic Space and Polynomial Time on Chordal Claw-Free Graphs
We show that the class of chordal claw-free graphs admits LREC=-definable canonization. LREC= is a logic that extends first-order logic with counting by an operator that allows it to formalize a limited form of recursion. This operator can be evaluated in logarithmic space. It follows that there exists a logarithmic-space canonization algorithm for the class of chordal claw-free graphs, and tha...
متن کاملThe Minimum Bends in a Polyline Drawing with Fixed Vertex Locations
We consider embeddings of planar graphs in R where vertices map to points and edges map to polylines. We refer to such an embedding as a polyline drawing, and ask how few bends are required to form such a drawing for an arbitrary planar graph. It has long been known that even when the vertex locations are completely fixed, a planar graph admits a polyline drawing where edges bend a total of O(n...
متن کاملRemarks on the Complexity of Non-negative Signed Domination
This paper is motivated by the concept of nonnegative signed domination that was introduced by Huang, Li, and Feng in 2013 [15]. We study the non-negative signed domination problem from the theoretical point of view. For networks modeled by strongly chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs, we show that the non-negative signed domination problem can be solved in polynomial time. For networ...
